Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) which can be passed from person to person through sexual contact. It is the most common STI in the UK, and is especially common in people aged 16 to 24 . In fact, more than 1 in 10 sexually active young people who are tested have Chlamydia with manchester being a high risk area

Both men and women can catch Chlamydia. Some women who are infected experience pain on passing urine, a change in vaginal discharge, or unusual bleeding. Some men notice a discharge from their penis, and pain on passing urine, or in the testicles. However most people who are infected have no symptoms.

If chlamydia is left untreated, it can spread to other parts of the body, causing long term problems such as infertility.

At Thacker’s Pharmacy, Wythenshawe we offer a test which is free and painless as part of the RU Clear service. It is only available to people who are under 25, but if you are over 25 we can give you the details of a local sexual health clinic where the test is also available. The test can also find out if you have another STI called Gonorrhoea. The results of your test are sent to you 2 weeks later and they are completely confidential. They can be sent be text message on your mobile phone.

If you test positive for Chlamydia, you will be contacted to arrange treatment. The treatment is usually a single dose of an antibiotic, but sometimes may be a two week course of antibiotics. The treatment is 95% effective.
