Thackers Pharmacy

Needle Exchange

What is the Needle and Syringe Exchange Scheme?

The needle and syringe exchange programme is one of the harm reduction measures that aim to prevent the spread of blood-borne viruses such as HIV, Hepatitis B and C among people who inject drugs. The scheme provides access for injecting drug users who are unable, or are not ready to, quit injecting to use sterile syringes every time.

Why is Thackers Pharmacy getting involved?

We are encouraging injecting drug users to obtain free sterile injecting equipment for single use every time. This will reduce the risk of injecting drug users coming into contact with other users infected blood.

Users are able to return the used injecting equipment within their personal ‘sharps’ bin. This is to ensure safe disposal and will reduce the risk of anyone in the community being injured and/or infected.

The service is confidential with only the initials and date of birth required.
